A Justice of the Peace is an elected public servant dedicated to delivering peace and justice to the community.
They possess integrity and fairness in protecting the rights of individuals.
Each county in Arizona has justice courts over which JPs preside, serving four-year terms. They have jurisdiction to resolve criminal misdemeanors and civil lawsuits for less than $10,000.
They handle traffic violations, DUIs, landlord/tenant disputes, workplace harassment cases, domestic violence cases, and requests for Orders of Protection.
Arizona law does not require JPs to be lawyers, although the Arizona Supreme Court requires all to complete a course at the Arizona Judicial College.
